Virgil L. Smith - Biography
With over four decades of experience in the media industry, Virgil L. Smith founded the Smith Edwards Group, LLC in 2015 after a distinguished 44-year career at McClatchy Gannett Companies. During his tenure, he held various leadership roles, including President and Publisher at the Stockton Record and Asheville Citizen-Times. Prior to his retirement, Smith also served as a corporate HR executive, overseeing talent acquisition and development, as well as leadership and diversity initiatives across broadcast, print, and digital operations.
With the McClatchy Company, Smith's extensive career spanned a range of executive roles, including Human Resources Director, Director of Consumer Marketing, and Chief Labor Negotiator. Throughout his professional journey, he has consistently empowered numerous professionals to achieve their career and personal aspirations, leaving a lasting impact on those he has worked with.
In addition to his roles as a consultant and career coach, Smith also holds the position of President of the Board of Trustees for the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.
Smith has authored the book "The Keys for Effective Leadership" and has been recognized for his contributions by numerous professional and community organizations. His awards include the Ida B. Wells Award for Distinguished Leadership, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Asheville Human Relations Council, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy of Peace, Justice and Community Award.
Smith holds a Bachelor of Science and Master's degree from the University of San Francisco and an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of North Carolina, Asheville. He resides in Atlanta with his wife, Joann Smith, PhD.
